Program for January 5, 2007

Meet Your Fellow Rotarians

"What are you talking about?" you say. "I know my fellow Rotarians."

But with the induction of many new members, you may know less, and be less known, than you think. Program Maestro Jim Young, therefore, asks each of us to sit at a different table than usual and — ready for this one?— be prepared to give a 60-second "Who Am I?" talk.

But wait, there's more. Jim also asks us to consider how to complete this sentence:

"What this community needs is a... "

Meeting of December 29th, 2006

Welcome, Invocation, Thought for the Day

Everyone's favorite president-elect Pam Jones called the meeting to order. Since the gathering was attended mostly by die-hard provocateurs like Werner Schwarz and John Nicol, establishing order was harder than it sounds.

The Thought for the Day was offered by Henry Kelman, who was thankful he could spend the day with this family.

Happy/Sad Dollars

Continuing the family theme, Nick was happy that his daughter Krina was able to spend 3 entire weeks in the month of December with him and Nel.

Werner felt charmed because he was on United Flight 503 from Denver, one of the last to escape the city before it was blanketed by several feet of snow.

Alan Baer was happy for his birthday, which falls on the very popular birthday date of December 25th, and gave a donation to his Paul Harris.

Ralph Hill happily recounted this story of age fraud: His friend, who is 83, just married a much younger woman— a model for Victoria' Secrets! Apparently his secret is that he told her he was 93. Shh...

Announcements

Pam announced names of the newly-elected board of directors. The envelope, please. They are: EJ Shalaby, Glenn Daggs and Jan Brown. Watch these folks for delusions of grandeur.

The Reno Train Trip

John Nicol has been hard at work organzing the perennial rail excursion through the snowy mountains. Dates are January 21st and 22nd. Let him know if you're in. See the trip schedule for departure, arrival, and Ice Cream Gin Fizz times.

Raffle

Leigh Johnson drew the raffle ticket and found Nick's name. Despite the discovery by our vigilant president-elect that there were actually 2 orange balls among the 7 in the bag, Nick drew a white ball. Just call him lucky. Oh well, as Miilton Friedman remarked, "There's no free lunch. Except sometimes."

The Program

Who Am I: Leigh Johnson

Leigh was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Florida, joining the Air Force out of high school. Upon returning to civilian life, she worked as an air traffic controller for 12 years, before returning to school to complete her undergraduate degree in biology at CalState Hayward.

Not content with that, she then went to JFK Law School and began practicing law in 2003. Leigh practices in the areas of family and probate law. Leigh has a 30 year old son.

Welcome Leigh!
