Richmond Rotarian Lilliane Koziol Spotlights Madagascar

On Tuesday, November 6, 2007, our Rotarian Liliane Koziol presented a program to the Rotary Club of Moraga. The Moraga Club bulletin written by Past R.I. President Cliff Dochterman, states:

Madagascar next to Africa

"Past District Governor, Werner Schwarz, introduced our guest speak, Dr. Liliane Koziol, along with a ‘talking frog story’ related to one our out octogenarian members. In the coming months, our District’s Group Study Exchange team of young business and professional men and women will be going to Madagascar for four weeks. A similar team will be coming from Madagascar to our area in April, 2008.

"Our district’s team leader will be Dr. Liliane Koziol, a member of the Richmond rotary Club and director of Programs at International House at the University of California in Berkeley and the speaker for today’s meeting.

"Dr. Koziol was born in Madagascar and serves as the Honorary Consul of Madagascar in western United States. She presented a very interesting visual program which described the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar on the eastern side of Africa. This democratic nation of 19 million people became independent from France in 1960. It is a tropical agricultural country with a per capita income of only $960. Dr. Koziol described the religion, health, economy, natural resources, experts and environmental concerns of Madagascar. She also told about the Group Study Exchange team of four members, mostly with professional backgrounds related to environmental issues, which will be traveling with her. There were a number of questions about the GSE program. Certainly she will be a very able leader of District 5160's GSE Team."

The luncheon was preceded and followed by a private briefing on all aspects of Rotary International by Past R.I. President Cliff Dochterman. We can be proud to have members such as Liliane Koziol in our club.
