He worked at IBM for many years overseas in the Orient. Jim has a fascination with foreign languages particularly how they can help you understand a cultures history. For example in China one is often greeted, in Chinese of course, with the phrase "have you eaten today?" This is because there were great starvations in their history. Anyway, his talk was on how to come up with unusual answers to difficult questions. His call the process "Outside the Box" It involves three components: one. Rethinking the problem, 2. Challenging the assumptions, and 3. Changing you point of view. The siege of Troy with the Trojan horse; moving campuses to remote locations like Delta College has done; and installing ATM's at banks are examples of people rethinking their problems. He showed a picture of a boy dropping a block of wood and asked what is going to happen when the boys lets go? The correct "Challenging the assumptions" answer is: Is the boy in space? Alternatively, is he under water? He explained that the French embarked on the Panama Canal project using the same assumptions they used with the Suez Canal which were wrong and led to a great loss of life and money. Changing your point of view was the last technique demonstrated. He used the example of the man who annoyingly always got burs stuck in his corduroy pants but who later used the problem to invent Velcro and thereby turned a problem into a success. So how do we become out of the box decision makers? He advised the following methods: ·Play thinking games ·Alter your daily routine ·Watch less lazy TV ·Read science fiction ·Learn about languages ·Try to see the world as though a child eyes. ·Read humorists ·Embrace failure. Sounds good to me. |
