Graham Hawks

Director Mark Howe introduced Graham Hawkes as our speaker of the day. Many of us remember his visit to the club last year when he spoke of  his "Deep Flight Aviator, a state of the art, two person underwater flight trainer, purpose-built to fully develop the potential for underwater flight and for economical, long-range exploration. Today Mr. Hawkes chose to speak of his desire to perhaps channel more dollars destined for space exploration back to Earth. He said that Earth was really a water planet since 94% of all life on earth lives in water and not on land. He predicted that within the next hundred years that the name of the planet would be changed to something more accurate. As seen from space with the suns light dancing off the oceans, Earth has been described as the "Jewel of our Universe". Much of our oceans remain to be fully explored. The rocks and mineral deposit could be vast and much more economically mined than going to the moon. Japan is one nation currently invested in exploring the ocean depths. As more countries get involved, Mr. Hawkes sees a new expansion of people and resources much like our own "Wild West" moving forward into the "Wild Wet West".

Humoring us with tales of other's unsuccessful scientific journeys to find a living giant squid, he professed his dream to be the first one to actually do it.

The members had many questions for Mr. Hawkes which he gladly answered.

New Member
President Stoney inducted long time guest Ronda Harris into the club today. While presenting the red badge to Rhonda, Stoney informed her of the things need to turn that red badge blue. Attend a Board Meeting, Join a Committee and give a short Who Am I to the club. Rhonda was then welcomed warmly with a standing ovation.

I
nternational Project
Director George Egan has mailed a description of this year's International Project with a donation request to all club members. "The Children of Deva" project will build a new trade school in Deva, Hungary. Please write a check for the maximum donation and mail it back to George before 12/31/03. 100% of the monies collected will go directly to the project and can be applied towards a Paul Harris award.

Flu Shots
Thanks to the generous support of Doctors Medical Center San Pablo, and San Pablo Rotarian Michel Burleson of DMCSP, Susan Ancill, RN, will be administering flu shots on Friday, 21 November 2003 at the Mira Vista Country Club.  Reports suggest that flu season has started earlier this year, and so all are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.  A big thanks to DMC for its support of community health initiatives."

Last Week

Prez Stoney began the meeting with a silent prayer for freedom and peace on earth. Dr. Herb Cole led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. President Stoney then delivered the short story; I mean thought for the day recognizing Veterans Day. It was an excerpt form Bob Dole's "Courage beyond Measure". The club then acknowledged all the veterans in the room.

Visiting Rotarians

Guests
Jim Beaver had two guests: Sarah Altshuler and Ruth Vasquez Jones. Dr. Herb introduced John Marquez who is no stranger to our club. Jim Young brought Lemlem Rijio who was  representing G.R.I.P.

Sunshine Report
Gloria Johnston is home and recuperating from back surgery. David Ninomiya is out of the isolation ward and back at his apartment in SF. Joey Bags is blue that several people in his family are having some medical problems. Hans Shaper had a stroke but is at home and doing better.

Recognitions
Although neither one was present President Stoney informed us that Don Lau was another year older and that Bill Reid had another anniversary.  Hopefully the "Four Way Test" will be applied and their check's are in the mail.
Speaking about fair, Stoney fined himself $20 for delivering what had to be the longest thought for the day in club history!

Announcements

Prez Stoney again announced his Presidency's major fund raising event for the club,
"Holiday Party 2003!"  The party is December 11th at the Mira Vista CC. Stoney advised that each member is expected to pony up  $150/couple whether they attend or not. The evening will include MVCC's premium supper package, live band, dancing, and many as yet unnamed surprises. This event will be "semi-formal" Please R.S.V.P. to Gloria's secretary Debbie at 510-620-2080 by 12/05/2003 and send your checks to Joe Nusbaum. Excess funds from this event will go to Polio Plus, Rotarians Against Malaria and the Peres School Project. Jim Beaver reminded us that the club's Holiday Auction is coming up December 5th.  Remember to bring your spouse &/or significant other and Jim B. said, "I'll be calling you" to arrange for the auction item you will be bringing.

Happy/Sad $$
With the attending members feeling flush with cash, many happy and few sad dollars filled the club's coffers. David Brown was happy that his dad was doing OK. Jim Young was sad to learn that Lisa Brandes had broken her shoulder when the Young's and Brandes' were hanging out in Mi-Wuk. Herb Cole was excited about his upcoming trip to Mexico to deliver wheel chairs to the needy and mentioned that several of our club's members had sponsored some chairs. Hank Covell was proud of the Avon 60 mile Walk to fight breast cancer and also thanked the club member's who donated to that worthy cause which raised over 5 million dollars. Erle Brown, feeling very noble and sorry that he was too tight to take Herb's $100 dollar bet for the Cal/USC game, matched Herb with $100 to go to Polio Plus and threw in another $20 believing that Cal would beat Stanford on Nov. 22. Not a peep was heard from the Stanford contingent! Dr. Cole then forked over the $5 that he owed Erle for the original bet. David K. was glad that his mom got through some minor surgery and was home doing better. Elof was sad that he was the only one wearing a Red Poppy in remeberance of Veteran's Day and Canada's role in it.. Not wanting to let Elof's remark go unchallenged, John Nicol displayed His "Ruptured Duck"pin. It was worn on uniforms above the right breast pocket by WWII servicemen and women.

Raffle

With just seconds to go before Hank Covell's hand slipped into the ping pong filled bag, David Brown yelled, I'll give you $20 bucks for your pull". Gravity won out as Hank's hand continued it's decent into the bag and produced the orange ball!
