Betty Sue King, Precious Gems

Today's speaker was Betty Sue King who was introduced by Oscar Lugo.Winging it without her Power Point presentation Ms.King presented a overview of the pearl industry beginning with the early 1900s and discovery of the method to cultivate pearls, thru the fashions of the 1950s and 60s and up to the 1990s and the establishing of pearl farms in China and Australia. As she discussed the methods for commercial cultivation and the techniques used in creating pearls of many colors, she passed around several strands of different sized and multi-hued pearls. In testing the old adage that real pearls can be identified by the way they feel against your teeth, Ralph Hill bit off a little more than he wanted to chew (or spend) when he discovered that particular strand was worth over $57,000!!

Last Week

On a clear, crisp day President Stonework called the group to order offering first a silent prayer for freedom and peace on earth. The Pledge was led by stealth Stanford Alum Pam Jones. Thought for the day offered by Prez -- Pearl S Buck, basically says respect the old because we all get there  someday.  Actual words are "Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members.
Erle Brown suggested the thoought for the day could be abbreviated to "Go Bears".

Visiting Rotarians
Michael Burleson and Susan Ancill from San Pablo.

Guests

Sunshine Report
David K informs us that Gloria Johnson is recovering from back surgery. A card was circulated. President Stoney reported that Werner S is having some tests done.  John Nicol wondered if the tests were for physical or mental purposes.

Recognitions
Don Lau and Dick King were recognized for their birthdays and both promised to get checks into the mail.

Announcements

Prez Stoney again announced his Presidency's major fund raising event for the club,
"Holiday Party 2003!"  The party is December 11th at the Mira Vista CC. Stoney advised that each member is expected to pony up  $150/couple whether they attend or not. The evening will include MVCC's premium supper package, live band, dancing, and many as yet unnamed surprises. This event will be "semi-formal" Please R.S.V.P. to Gloria's secretary Debbie at 510-620-2080 by 12/05/2003 and send your checks to Joe Nusbaum. Excess funds from this event will go to Polio Plus, Rotarians Against Malaria and the Peres School Project. Jim Beaver reminded us that the club's Holiday Auction is coming up December 5th.  Remember to bring your spouse &/or significant other and Jim B. said, "I'll be calling you" to arrange for the auction item you will be bringing.

Happy/Sad $$
Judy K was happy to have had a fine lunch at the Baltic as part of an item she had won at last years auction and was less happy to discover that the contractors luncheon that she had also won at Little Angies did not include the vow of silence she had been led to expect.  Apparently, unlike Vegas or the Reno train trip, what happens at a contractors luncheon does not always stay there.

Jon Lawlis and Erle Brown also had happy dollars for the contractors lunch and Erle additionaly had lots of four letter word rhymes  with his comments concerning the Big Game,
the most pertinent being that he and Josh had a $20 bet on the outcome with the victor donating to the club.

Josh G listed the six specific reasons a resaonable person would pick Cal to win the Big Game this weekend and concluded that he was picking Sanford.

Paul H recounted that he visited Joe Bagley and found him preparing to visit and support his sister and her family as she fights breast cancer. Paul was also happy that the Peres School Reading night was a success with many readers coming form the club and also that we had donated another computer. Getting the most out of his happy $ Paul also bragged on his Novato High School football team and their efforts to become the DaLaSalle of the North Bay.

Stoney claimed Big Game naming rights for the Ohio State\Michigan game this weekend and rooted the Buckeyes on while Don lau chimed in with a vote for Michigan.

Raffle

After failing to get Hank to give up the winning pull for $20 last week, David Brown took one for the team this week by grabbing a white!
