Laura Holmes, Goody Goody

You Guys were probably not paying attention to the gifts that the District Governor received last Friday, but one of them was a pair of Goody Good Slippers. Laurie Holmes is the owner of Goody Goody and she started this business in true Horatio Alger fashion out of her house in Point Richmond. Today she is quiet a success in Richmond. She occupies the old Volvo dealership on 23rd which she owns. Her husband joined her in the business as it grew. Her designs are flamboyant and exciting. She will talk about how the business started and grew into a multi-million dollar enterprise. She will explain how she manages the production of her products in China and sells them via the trade show distribution channel. Laurie has two beautiful daughters who appear on the cover of her catalog that you will see today.
You can visit her website at

We welcome this dynamic woman to our club.

Program for Friday September 19, 2003

Ridgeway Banks, Inventor

Ridgeway Banks will discuss the subject of his life's work, Nitinol. What the heck is that you ask? Well it is a rare alloy of titanium and nickel that was discovered by accident in the 50's by the US Defense Department. The metal has the astounding property, once it is bent in cold water, of violently returning to its original shape after is is placed in hot water. But you say that after a couple of cycles the metal will fatigue like all metals and fail - wrong again. He has a small piece of wire in his shop that has been cycling 24 hours a day non-stop for 5 years !! Amazing stuff and you will see in in action.

Program of September 5, 2003

District Governor Connie Crawford

So that she won't soon forget her visit to Richmond, lots of goodies were presented to Governor Connie.
Judy Morgan handed over a large basket filled with products that came from businesses within the City of Richmond as well as a beautiful bouquet of flowers and an engraved plaque from the City of Richmond. Werner bestowed upon Connie a jacket with the Peres School and East Brothers Lighthouse logo. President Stoney also gave her a banner from our club.

Governor Connie took the podium to deliver the day's program.

She spoke of the value of fellowship in Rotary and of her experiences meeting this year's Rotary International President Jonathan B Majiyagbe, of   Kano, Nigeria as well as his theme for the year "Lend A Hand".

She also spoke about the literacy program focused on educating woman and children being sponsored in the name of the of Mr. Majiyagbe's late wife  Ade.  A collection basket was passed and returned well filled to represent our club's support for this worthwhile program.

She informed us of the upcoming Brazilian Picnic in Dixon on Sat. Oct 18 and encouraged us to attend.  A few reminders were presented to President Stoneworth so he would be sure to solicit attendance.

In deference to the railroad history of her home town of Dunsmuir in  her year she has decided that each club should  identify some Rotarians whose contributions over the years make them "movers and shakers".  Joe Bagley, Jim Beaver, Leslie Levy, Jonathan Lawlis, Mark Howe, Werner Schwarz, Charlie Wong and Dan Ercolini were recognized in this presentation.

In conclusion Connie lead the club in a spirited rendition of a song another Rotarian had created called, appropriately enough, Lend A Hand.
