Ridgeway Banks, Inventor

Ridgeway Banks will discuss the subject of his life's work, Nitinol. What the heck is that you ask? Well it is a rare alloy of titanium and nickel that was discovered by accident in the 50's by the US Defense Department. The metal has the astounding property, once it is bent in cold water, of violently returning to its original shape after is is placed in hot water. But you say that after a couple of cycles the metal will fatigue like all metals and fail - wrong again. He has a small piece of wire in his shop that has been cycling 24 hours a day non-stop for 5 years !! Amazing stuff and you will see in in action.

Laura Holmes

Susan Howe introduced our speaker for the day Laura Holmes, founder of Goody Goody, a local Richmond business. Laura designs and distributes colorful and artistic textile based products. Laura started making her own clothes and shoes when she was a young child. After making some shoes for her new baby she decided that she should be able to turn what she loved to do into a business.

Starting in her basement and armed with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, she embarked on the entrepeneurial road of small business. She quickly outgrew her basement work space and expanded into a public storage facility to ship her products from. Goody Goody merchandise is produced all over the world in places such as China, Spain and Mexico. The company expanded again into an old car dealership on 23rd Street in Richmond.

Describing herself as the "Queen Bee", Laura and her workforce made up of lots of local kids and a few permanent employees, box and distribute their wares to over three thousand active accounts. You can find Goody Goody products at Marshall Fields, Nordstroms and many museums and galleries.

Laura circulated a broad range of her work to the audience.
The  many beautiful items included slippers, baby shoes, cosmetic cases and scarfs. I'm not sure if they all returned safely to the front table. Many Rotarians were interested in purchasing from Goody Goody . You can do so at
www.goodygoodyshoes.com

Claiming to be an "accidental business woman" Laura and her husband are enjoying their twelth year in business. We all know that it takes a lot of hard work and maybe a little luck but Goody Goody's sucsess is no accident.

Thank you Laura for an interesting program.

FYI
In an effort to educate and better comminuvcate to the club what Richmond Rotary and it's Directors are doing behind the scenes, President Stoney introduced Secretary Joe Nusbaum. Joe described how your dues and donations are spent. Of the $150 paid in dues, $89 goes to Rotary International and District 5160. The balance goes into the Club's General Fund. Each year we fund many programs. This year $2000 will go to Peres School and $2000 is ear marked for our Centennial Project. The cost of running the club comes from this fund. Happy/ Sad dollars and Raffle proceeds also go into the General Fund.  The basket that circulates every meeting goes into scholarship funding. With this money we send kids to Camp Royal and a leadership program in Oakland. When former Rotarian Carl Reyfus passed, he left a big chunk of money to the club. It was his desire to promote Rotary in Richmond. Many of us have had matching Paul Harris dollars from this fund. The plan was to let the principal grow and use the interest only. The idea was to establish endowment that would benefit  many Rotatrians to come. When you donate to this fund you are furthering this cause. Donations to Rotary International go to helping others world wide. Erle Brown stood up to explain how to write your checks so you get propper credit for foundation donations. Please make checks out to "Rotary Foundation" and in the memo section indicate where you want this money to go. For example, Paul Harris for you or someone you designate, Polio Plus or some overseas project that might be matched by the Foundation. If you leave the memo line blank the donation will go to the Rotary International General Fund. If you have questions that need answers please contact any club officer or director.
You can email them directly by folowing this  link

Last Week

In the cozy basement room at La Strada Restaurant President Stoney opened today's meeting with a silent prayer for freedom and peace on earth. Joe Nusbaum then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Feeling rather poetic, Stoney delivered the following verse as the thought for the day

Truth is the trial of itself
And needs no other touch.

And purer than the purest gold
Refine it ne'er so much
Ben Johnson, On Truth, 1616

Guests
Susan Howe and her friend Chely Knox were guests at the front table today. President Stoney presented his guest Rhonda Harris (who may be buying her own lunch soon) and Werner introduced Joe Boome of Orion Logistics Warehouse in Richmond.

Prospective New Members
Pres. Stoney has proposed for membership Thomas Cameron under a classification of Printing-Graphics, and Paul Washington under a classification of Banking, Investments.  Any objection to these nominees
should be forwarded to
Secretary Nusbaum on or before 9/24/03.
