Polio Plus Trip to Ghana

Ted and Judy and Herb, for as long as he was present, will talk about their adventure to Ghana for Polio Plus.  Judy will have to specifically explain why she came back after being treated like royalty, with servants doing the laundry, driving her around, cooking and whatever else she had in mind for them to do

Annual Holiday Auction
The holiday auction took place today and the highlights are:

David Brown's Estate Package went to Bill Reid for $850.
Charley Wong's Tahoe Cabin at King's beach that is available in May and October was bought by Susan Howe for $350.
Rich Brandes's Day on the Bay went to Jim Young for $300.
Josh Genser donated an original Dewitt Glese framed by Pam Dewitt.  It was bought by Mark Howe for $90.
Jim Cannon donated a two hour guided lunch tour for 4 persons on the newly refurbished Richmond Railway.  The spirited bidding contest was won by Jon Lawlis for $350.  Tom Butt was the other anxious bidder.
An Al and Tipper Gore autographed picture book was donated by  ?????????  was sold to Ted Abrew for $75 and it came with some hanging chad.  This item generated so much chatter I could barely hear anything.
Mark Howe donated a trip for four on this Years Vallejo Race for both Saturday and Sunday.   It was bought by two couples for $300 each for a total of $600.  The two couples were the Tanitas, and the Youngs.
Herb Cole donated a Sturgeon or Striper fishing trip in the Delta for two.  He will be serving Bombadier gin on the trip, which convinced Jon Lawlis to buy it for $275.
Jan and Don Hardison donated a progressive dinner for six.  Cocktails at Jan's and and gourmet dinner afterwards and Don's.  Three couples won this item: The Coles, Covells, and the Howes at $150 each or $450 total.
The famous case of Teader Ripple was sold for $180 to Earl Brown.
Rich Brandes donated an unlimited stay at his cabin in Twain Harte.   It sold  to the Josh Genser family for $500.  Josh tells the editor he will be moving there permanently soon.
Don Miller has a 900 SF cabin in Capitola whose use for a weekend he donated.  This item sold to Mark Swanson for $320.
A Weekend stay at East Brother Light House was donated by Tom Butt.  It was purchased by Dan Tanita for $400.
In 1976 Hank Covell bid $15 for a bottle of wine in a paper bag thinking that it was a fine wine.  When he discovered that it was a bottle of cheap Gallo Muscatel, the club burst out laughing-he was tricked. He bought it back in 1977 with the caveat that every buyer hence shall not drink the wine and will return it every auction to be resold.  Hank estimates that this seventy five cent bottle of wine, over the last 25 years, has generated over $3,500 dollars for the club.  Jon Lawlis bought it last year for $350 and it was bought this year by Mark Howe for $325.  Charlie Fender holds the record of buying the bottle for the cheapest price of $3 - wow I guess the Muscatel inflation index in kind of inflated.   Since your editor has the bottle in his possession the other dymo-label names on the side of it are: Covell 4 times, Kelman 3 times, Nicholl 2 times, and the other names are, Earl Brown, Bob Morris Junior, Darrold Davis, Hans Mueller, Sam Sarkissian, Ralph Hill, Dave Niniomiya, Doug Straus, Don Hardisson, Norm Lundberg X2, Jim the Beav, Lawlis, and Don Miller.
A Mira Vista foursome was bought for $250 by Joni Hiramoto.

There were many more wonderful items sold and the whole auction was a great success earning approximately $1,700 more than last year for a preliminary total $9,700.

Last Week

DAVID BROWN rang the bell and issued these words of wisdom:  "In  Washington DC this year they were not allowed to have a nativity scene because nobody could find three wise men and a virgin."  He went on to encourage everyone to drink wine from the open bottles at each table - saying if that it was in the best interests of the club for everyone to do so.  Judging by the results of the auction everyone took him up on the offer or they were particularly generous

Visiting Rotarians:
Bob Miller from Folsom Calif. is a visiting Rotarian.

Guests:
Mark Howe brought his wife Susan to the club auction - this turned out to be a rather pricey decision.

President Dave had in his company today his wife and partner Cheryl.
Ren Partridge brought his wife, confidant, and accommodator AKA wife.
Dan E. brought his boss Mark Swanson, who by the way was an active bidder and who we will forgive him for attending that University whose name starts with an S in the south bay.
