Program for Friday June 6, 2003 TBA Door Duty: Judy Kafka and John Nicol * * * * * * * * * Program for Friday June 13, 2003 Demotion!!! Door Duty: Judy Morgan and Henry Kelman * * * * * * * * * Program of May 30, 2003 Dianne Burns, Richmond DNA Lab Captain Mark Howe introduced the day's speaker, Dianne Burns. Diane is a scientist at the Richmond DNA laboratory, located in Point Richmond in the old Pixar location. If I got it right, Diane is a criminalist vice a criminologist. In any state other than California she would be a forensic scientist. She provided an excellent discussion of how DNA is used to solve crimes. Much of her information was passed during the question and answer period. The current DNA database she uses is based primarily on the prison population. The military database is not available to her laboratory. One's DNA designation is recorded in the database using 13 numbers. Diane clearly spends a lot of time in Court undergoing interrogation by defense counsels. . Happy/Sad $$ David K had some happy dollars and a great story about a vehicular near miss involving elastic cargo straps on the road, the I-80 freeway and a leaking gasoline tank. Makes you want to smell the roses. Paul Hodgen, who is single-handedly responsible for the recent decrease in the price of gasoline, had happy dollars as well - alas your scribe lost the bubble and your comments must go unrecorded Paul. |
` Last Week With our short-timer Prez absent without leave, our humble Ex-Prez stepped to the plate and took a few swings. It was great to see Pam Jones and she led the pledge of allegiance. Thought for the Day - "You can judge your age by the amount of pain you feel when you come into contact with a new idea" - anonymous. Visiting Rotarians We had two Visiting Rotarians - Michel Burleson, Vice President of San Pablo Rotary and a frequent visitor; and Graham Cullen from Berkeley, classification marine surveyor. Bill Frank put in an appearance at the bar and disappeared when he learned who was going to be at the podium. Guests Charlie Wong introduced two guests of the disappearing Bill Frank - H. Nakahara and Joevic Fabregas, both with California Oils in Richmond. Announcements Rotarians are needed for Camp Royal. Rotarians are invited to stay the week and participate in the entire program. That means sleep on platforms with the campers, listen to the powerful speakers and be available to discuss the impact of the messages delivered. See if you can carve some time out on your calendars and help out this summer June 15-21. A rewarding experience. Contact Elisabeth Andreason - Direct 925-288-3741. Elisabeth.Andreason@morganstanley.com. The Rotary International Conference is 1-4 June in Australia. You might still make it. Coming Speakers June 20th - Steve Seskin, Award Winning Songwriter Recognitions Don Lau, the Grand PooBah of substitute Recognitions Chairmen, discovered that absences had shortened his list. But Dave Ninomiya was present and recognized for a notable anniversary with Janet. Dave had some thorns amongst the roses with recent medical news - our thoughts are with you Dave. . Raffle Diane Burns won the chance to draw, and selected an egg. The short fortuneteller who escaped from prison was a small medium at large. Semper Paratus |
