Spirit of Excellence

Dan Ercolini introduced our Program - the Peres Elementary School Spirit of Excellence kids and their sponsor Maxine Harris.  Maxine provided a description of the program at Peres.  The Spirit of Excellence Program is expanding every year - this year 35 students are involved.

Accompanied by great photographs of Walker Creek Camp activities, five young girls read mini-essays about their camp experiences.  They were April Clark, Marjala Mims, Breona Wills, Sinclaire Adam and Michelle Saecho.  The only boy in the selected group was Robin Elias, who wasn't able to attend the meeting.  Most of these students were second year alumni of the Spirit of Excellence Program.

Maxine Harris summarized the value of the program to Peres kids as helping them learn how to set and achieve goals, motivating them to work to be on the honor role, learning to behave at all times, and overall, to be the best person they can be.  At  the end of their presentation, the kids drew lots and Sinclaire Adam won the computer and monitor set up in the corner of the room.   She was giddy with excitement.

Thank you Judy Kafka, for the hundreds of hours of volunteer work and coordination you have done with this program.  And thanks Dan for your long time involvement and making the computer available.  This is what Rotary is all about.   John Nicol brought up the subject of Phyliss Peres Brown - and the fact that her grandfather contributed the property where the school is located.  The kids were very interested.

Last Week

This was the popular Peres School Kids meeting with a good turnout.  Prez Dave opened the meeting by calling for the Club's Best Skipper to lead the pledge.  A lengthy pause followed, time for serious soul-searching by a number of skippers in the crowd, but Captain Mark Howe finally owned-up and lead the pledge.  The Prez gave the Thought-for-the-Day:  "The function of education is to help you from childhood not to imitate anybody, but be yourself all the time" - Jiddu Krishnamurti.

Visiting Rotarians:

Guests:
Teb Abreu brought two guests, our Camp Royal students for 2003, both from Middle College High School, Janice Reed and J.J. Wheatly.  Prez Dave introduced his guest at the head table, Linda Patton, owner of the home on 39th Street that was the focus of our Christmas in April endeavor.  Judy Kafka must have been gossiping at the table, because she didn't admit until the end of the meeting that she brought Debbie Stern as her guest.

Prez Dave described a grand Vallejo Race Yacht with a Rotarian crew aboard Mark Howe's sleek greyhound of the seas.  The race was mostly downwind and the spinnaker was flying all the way to the finish line.  The Tanita's and Young's helped run the cockpit while Prez Dave (foredeck hand) and John Medlock (the real sailor on the crew) handled the running rigging.  Captain "full and by" Mark kept the vessel on a rum line course and successfully avoided a mutiny.

Ren Partridge had a motorcycle accident and is recovering slowly.  We wish you a rapid recovery Ren and look forward to your return.  Have you considered  sailboat racing?

Both a Passport and Visa are required, and you don't want to be "stopped at the gate" because a Visa has not been ordered early enough for travel to Australia.

Recognitions

Happy/Sad $$

George Egan had a happy $20 after making a lot of money during tax season and having enjoyed his vacation in Virginia.  Dan Ercolini's daughter was the USC Student of the Quarter and he was happy about some recent softball games.  Prez Dave had $5 for the Club for Sunday being Mother's Day, and for remembering.  Hank Covell was sad that UC is threatening to raise their tuition fees 25%, but happy about his participation on a UC Trust Board where he can help students with scholarship programs.

Raffle
Ted Abreu won the ticket pick, but didn't pull the orange orb.  And Jon Lawlis wants to be Joann Blum's guest next week - her guests are cleaning up on the raffle winnings.
