Program
of November 8, 2002

Our speaker from the Vessel Traffic Service apparently got lost on the way to the Mira Vista.  Bottom line we had a no show from the VTS.  Your editor filled in with a story about how the VTS saved his life one very late night entering the San Francisco Bay on his sailboat.  That night the VTS was not AWOL.

Recognitions:

CHARLEY WONG 5/60, a member on the Rotary "Old Farts Club" celebrated his 77th Birthday.  More importantly to him, he visited Newport Rhode Island to see his granddaughter graduate from officers training school - the third Wong generation to do so - Wow!  There were 300 graduates and she was one of the fewer women grads.  She will be assigned to the Wilber, a destroyer  -- Charley is one proud Grandfather.  His donation completed his Paul Harris.  Happy B-Day Charley.

WERNER SCHWARTZ celebrated his Birthday.  He informed us that his daughter is also a destroyer, which got a few laughs.  After being asked how old is he, he responded - "OLD".  He celebrated his B Day with his very patient wife Lea at a nearby restaurant.  Werner donated Sheckles to his Paul Harris and is 75 years old.  Happy Birthday Werner.

DICK KING's wife Amaya celebrated her anniversary by breaking her Knee in a skydiving accident  -- this is a joke, she really fell over the family dog, but it got a few laughs.  41 years they have been married.  Dick made a donation to his Paul Harris.

DON MILLER's wife also celebrated their anniversary by breaking a bone.  In this case it was her arm.  Good thing pops is a Doc.  Don made a donation to polio plus.

BILL REID celebrated his 16th wedding anniversary.  However his recovery from recent back surgery has taken longer than expected.  We all wish he and his wife happy times and a speedy recovery.

DON LAU celebrated his Hawaii five O +1. After he wrote his check to Joe Bagley he said,  "I am just glad to be here today".  Don where can I get a shirt like the one you were wearing today - way cool.

Announcements

The full electronic version of the Flywheel will start this week.  This means that, only the four of you stuck in the stone age will still receive the paper version.  Lea is getting WERNER a computer this week - can anyone believe how productive he has been without one.  I think I will filter my E mail for his address.  Werner get DSL! and leave it on all the time -- it makes using the internet painless.
JON LAWLIS our fearless and tireless webmiester wanted to delete the OK email button that you push to get the weeks Flywheel when he was interrupted by COUNCILMEN BUTT requesting that it not be deleted -"I like it he said".  To which the always quick PRESIDENT DAVE responded "yes it is clear to all of us that you like E-mail" in reference to today's article in the C. C. Times about Tom's use of a privileged E-mail complaint from some police commissioners.  The room burst our laughing.  And so did I.
JOSH GENSER, this years chair of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce announced the following: (1.) 11/14/02 will be this months mixer and will be held at the Elks Club on El Portal in El Sobrante at 5:30.  (11/21) will be the next segment in the leadership series titled "So You Want to Run for Political Office".  The portion open to Rotarians will begin at 11:45 at Sojus restaurant in Point Richmond.  The luncheon speaker will be Melanie Wientraub a political campaign specialist and afterwards a star studded political panel of Bob Campbell, Jim Mcmillan, Sy Zell, and Alex Evans will be presided over by none other than Josh himself.  Cost $50.
