"Earth as a Village"

District Governor, Mark von Hoetzendorf visited the club Friday and spoke about Rotary of course.  To emphasize the importance of Rotary to the world he represented the inhabitants of the world as 100 people.  It was shocking:
1.Only 30% of the world is white.
2.6 people would possess 59% of the world's wealth and all 6 would be from the US.
3.70 would be unable to read.
4.50 would suffer from malnutrition.
5.Only one would have a college education.
6.Only one would have a computer.
7.If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of the world.
8.Over 1/3 of the world's population can't read.

To Quote him exactly "When you consider the world from such a perspective, the need for better health, humanitarian relief, and education provides many opportunities for Rotary Clubs and most importantly, Rotarians to be involved.

He issued some interesting statistics regarding Rotary District 5160 and our club.
Over the last year the district grew by almost 300 new members.  This is 4.7 people per club (i.e. 8%).   What does .7 of a person looks like. Answer:  a person who has completed a very successful diet.  Your club like all clubs will loose 10%-15% of its members this coming year so it is important to have an active recruitment program in place.  Translated this means we all have to start thinking about people we know who would be interested in Rotary with all of its commitments.  Remember each Rotarian is expected to bring at lease one new member in per year.  If that were happening the club would be growing at 100% per year not 8%.  The district governor also emphasized the quality of new recruits.  The club doesn't just need numbers it need quality people who are capable of donating their time and money to the Rotarian causes.

The Richmond club has a per capita giving rate of $97 each.  This is middle of the pack for the district.  Since its inception the club has donated over $250,000 to Rotary Intl.  Keep it up boys and girls.

Speaking of Rotary International we are in the middle of the Polio Eradication Campaign.  (7/1/02-3/31/03)  RI's goal is to raise $80 Million world wide.  Our districts share of this goal is $605,000.  This means each member will have to give $170 to meet the goal.  Of course we can also have fundraisers and try to get other organization in the community to give to the cause as well.

Probably the largest challenge facing the club is the Centennial project.  This is to be a large and visable project to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rotary.  There are many facet to the celebration but the most daunting involves our local project.  For example Pinole is building a botchy ball court.  Rotary Woodland is building a Baseball park and there are other clubs building hospital room additions.  President Dave and the project committee that has just been established are looking for ideas - so speak up members.

And he concluded with a summary of what he feels are the fundamental elements of a Rotarian.
·A true Rotarian feels a sense of goodwill towards his fellow man.
·This person conducts himself in accordance with the Rotary 4 way test.
·The true Rotarian speaks frankly but his also sympathetic and supporting.
·A true Rotarian views honor and reputation as the most valuable assets in his life.
·This Rotarian is the foundation of Rotary.

Meeting:
President Dave was given a Kazzoo lesson by our district governor while he was wearing a a very dorky hat imported from Bavaria, which he promised to wear for the rest of the year - I bet he forgets this little agreement - I certainly would.  Anyway the Kazoo lesson was quite entertaining and truly amusing - sorry President Dave it appears the humor was at your expense.

A moment of silence was held in memory of Walter Wolffs.
