Program of July 26, 2002

Joe Nusbaum introduced California State Trooper Joey Nardil.
Officer Nardil has been a State Trooper since 1984 and has specialized in k-9 corps work for the past ten years.Joey Nardil should be recognized as the one who introduced the concept of
using "pound" dogs as opposed to dogs with papers for police support activities. He told a fascinating story about his acquisition of his current dog Spike and the ways that Joey and Spike have been instrumental in saving the State thousands of dollars in police dog costs.

Officer Nardil trains dogs to work in patrol surveillance and capture, explosives detection and drug detections. Although some dogs are cross-trained, most specialize in one area. Spike specializes in explosives detection.

The dogs go through a thorough and exhaustive review prior to induction for training. The training is rigorous and only a select group make it to the State's K-9 core. Spike and his colleagues have socialized with humans and educated in the fine points of asset forfeiture.

Joey Nardil pointed out that the State's dogs receive full chauffeur service; live in friendly family situations; and are served excellent meals.

All Rotarians were impressed with Spike as he greeted each one us and then gave a demonstration of his considerable skills in explosive detection.

Thanks Joe Nusbaum for bringing Officer Nardil to Richmond Rotary.

Greetings Fellow Rotarians:

The next meeting of Richmond Rotary is set for Friday, August 2 at noon at the Mira Vista Country Club.

Last
Meeting:

Already we've noticed that new President David Brown is not
gonging the bell with the same gusto that he showed just after taking office. Nevertheless, there will be no palace coup. Mike Ready led us in the pledge. President David had some words about words -- too many words to include in this missive.

Visiting Rotarians:

Guests:  Judy Kafka introduced us to her good friend, Debbie
Sterns. Werner Schwarz' guest was Sally deWitt. Jim Young, candidate for Rotary membership, was making his last visit as a guest. Josh Genser's guest was his son Joseph. Welcome to all !

Announcements
Richmond Rotary is soliciting applications for Rotary's Group
Study Exchange. The deadline for applying is rapidly approaching. The scholarship is available to individuals who are pursuing higher education especially at the graduate level. For more information, please contact David Brown.

We received the sad information that our oldest member and most veteran member, Walter Wolffs, has been moved to a hospice.

Recognitions

Congratulations to Judy Kafka on her third wedding anniversary.

Happy $$$$$$

Bart Wallace is glad because his son will not be a lay-about this summer. The young man has a job!  Russell Schulz was pleased to announce that he aced a hole on a recent golf outing. David K. has made up for a slow summer of fishing in the Bay Area with a very successful angling trip to Montana. Joe Bagley was pleased to report that the first Friday night music fest in Point Richmond was very successful. He looks forward to the next event which is set for the second Friday in August. Don Lau was happy to be back in the fold of the club and David Brown was happy that Don had worked out things with the parole officer. David says, "just kidding."
