Program
of August 16, 2002

: Bart Wallace introduced our speaker, Lesa McIntosh, Director of the East Bay Municipal Utility District representing Ward 1 (Crockett, Hercules, Rodeo, San Pablo and portions of Richmond and Pinole). Water quality is EBMUD's forte, but the spiraling costs of energy, pressure from ratepayers, and the structure of the District as a public entity caused EBMUD to consider the possibility of entering the energy market. Lesa explained the investigative process, considerations, and tentative conclusions as the Board seeks to relay their findings to the community.  For the time being, EBMUD will stick to what it does best: delivering quality water and wastewater processing services (audible sigh of relief from PG&E). Small bits of other trivia slipped into the report …  did you know there can be more cyanide in bottled water than in your tap? … Or that providing water services to 75,000 new homes in a year's time supercedes planning for the next inevitable drought? Thank you Lesa McIntosh for sharing your report with Richmond Rotary.

Happy / Sad $$$$$$
Hank Covel is on his way to Rome next week … Dan Ercolini's soft ball team is on its way to being 5 and 0 …Master scribe, Guiseppe Verde, gave encouragement to the latest green notetaker… Past Pres Rich comes through in rough sailing weather in treating the Christmas Auction lucky high bidders (Dan and Dana) to an afternoon of sailing and lunch in the sun (albeit safely moored to a buoy for much of it) … Jon Lawlis wants the baseball strike prospect to go away…Joe Bagley and wife, Rita, are preparing to walk 60 miles for the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk, honoring both of their sisters' battles against the disease…Josh Genser announces the Richmond Chamber's Golf Tournament on September 23rd and is looking for participants and raffle prizes … Pres-for-the-day Dan is one happy guy thanks to his daughters, his wife, and a day on the Bay with the Brandes crew.

Last
Meeting:
Past President Daniel Tanita filled in for Prez David. Don Lau led the pledge of allegiance. Mahatma Gandhi provided the thought for the day: "If we are to reach real peace in the world, we shall have to begin with the children."

Sewing the Seeds of Love Inspirations: Last fall Richmond Rotary warmly welcomed (thanks to host and organizer Dan Tanita's efforts) a professional group of dentists from Russia. Prez-for-the-day Dan reports that he is in frequent email contact with one of our former guests who was inspired by his visit to start a new Rotary club in Russia (high-fives among Richmond Rotarians). Another Rotary outreach story…Dan reports that Rotary clubs are sending contributions to fellow clubs in towns affected by the current flooding crisis in Europe.

Visiting Rotarians:
A warm welcome to Ken Franceschi visiting from San Rafael.

Announcements

District Raffle: Look out…George Egan is eager to enjoy the Bavarian Bash on October 5 in Dixon with the clear conscience of a successful promoter. Your raffle book is in the mail. It's a win-win-win with prizes, Paul Harris credit, and the satisfaction that all proceeds benefit District Rotary's worthwhile programs.

Group Study Exchange: Know someone who might benefit and enjoy the GSE? Applications are being accepted.

Masquers and Dinner-at-the-Mac: Hank Covell is touting a great Rotary event on Thursday, September 12. At only $35 per person, it's one of Richmond's best entertainment deals. Don't miss it.

Community Service: Dan Ercolini, reminds us of the Art Train which is about to roll into Richmond on September 5 - 8. The City of Richmond is seeking volunteers in 4-hour slots for guiding tours or assisting in Lawrence-Hall-of-Science- led activities.

Peres School appeal for old but legal software: Rotary has lots of computers for students at Peres school (thanks to Bank of America); but alas, no brain or operating software. If you purchased a computer or Windows (98 preferred) operating system and can provide the original CD and key (serial number), many doors will open for our children at Peres School. Bring what you have to the next Rotary meeting and Dan will take it off your hands.

Recognitions
Sergeant-of-Arms-for-the-day (thank you Judy K. and John N.) suggest you find and proudly wear your Rotary pin. Joe Bagley received a standing ovation (in his dreams) and proceeded to honor with great distinction the finest of milestones in our club. Congratulations and Happy Anniversary to: Oscar and Nancy Lugo who celebrated their 23rd anniversary; Josh and Elaina Genser who celebrated 21 years; and Mike and Cindy Winter who celebrated their 42nd anniversary. Meanwhile, Elof Granberg has a birthday this week and looks plenty fit to blow out all those candles. Happy Birthday Elof!

Richmond Rotary Lotto
odds are getting better: Jim Cannon opted for another free lunch. We are down to just 6 balls, and a pot that hovers near $800.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30.

Respectfully submitted,
Jan B. Nimble
