Program
of August 2, 2002

President David introduced Michael Nixon, Coordinator of the new Bloodless Surgery Program at Doctor's Medical Center, who captured the interest of all of us. Michael introduced this option to traditional surgery techniques by asking: "How many of you think that the blood supply in the US is 100% safe?"  From here he led us to reflect on how our world is getting smaller. Like it or not, we all must face the challenge of addressing how to get along when we come from such different backgrounds, cultures, and religions. Medical care for all people must address the same issues. Doctor's Hospital is taking the lead in offering a coordinated program and medical commitment to respecting a patient's request for an alternative to the need for blood in surgery whether for religious, cultural, or safety reasons. Historically, the medical profession often confuses a patient's convictions with a refusal of care. Himself a Jehovah's Witness (a faith whose beliefs prohibit the acceptance of blood transfusions), Mr. Nixon gave us all a new sensitivity and appreciation of this growing medical expertise that reaches out to the community-at-large while avoiding the rising costs and short supply of blood. The Bloodless Surgery Program at Doctor's has nearly quadrupled its patient outreach in the three years of its existence. Thank you Michael Nixon and Doctor's Hospital for pursuing this area of health practice.

Greetings Fellow Rotarians:

The next meeting of Richmond Rotary is set for Friday, August 9 at noon at the Mira Vista Country Club.

Last
Meeting:
President David called the meeting to order at 12:30. Charlie Fender led us in the pledge.

Pres. David's words of wisdom:
It takes twice as much spiritual strength to be an honest business man as to be an honest teacher (rabbi), but if you have that much spiritual strength, why waste it on business?--- Rabbi Salanter

Visiting Rotarians:

Guests:  Charlie Fender introduced Jim Young as his guest for the last time before his induction as a new member. Jim was joined by his wife, Linda, and two banking associates from Walnut Creek.

Announcements
A very special Happy Birthday! to Walter Wollfs who celebrates his 95th on August 5. Walter is at home with the care of a hospice nurse (a correction to last week's Flywheel). Visitors and phone calls are welcome. In spirit, he's at our meetings where we all salute the milestone of Rotary's 1936 inductee. Joe Bagley announced next Friday's free music fest (the second in a summer concert series) in Point Richmond at the Baltic Restaurant featuring the Joyful Noise. Where to legally park in this growing metropolis remains an issue worthy of shuttle service. Hank Covell announced the first Antique Road Show to benefit the Richmond Museum Association on September 21 at the Richmond Auditorium. All antiques (bodies and furnishings) will be given a value. Should be interesting. Hank also announced the great annual Masquers /Dinner-at-the-Mac night on Thursday, September 12. $35 guarantees you one of Rotary's finest entertaining evenings. Don't miss it. Mike Ready was the successful bidder for Jim Cannon's Giants/Cubs seats.

Recognitions

Happy / Sad $$$$$$

All were happy. David Kuchenthal noted that we were enjoying what may very well be Mira Vista Club's finest fish lunch ever… a new trend in Rotary cuisine? David Brown recently completed successful laser eye surgery that has made him a visionary.

Richmond Rotary Lotto:
marches upward from $723 as Jim Cannon pulled a free lunch sans $.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30.

Respectfully submitted,
Jan B. Nimble
