Program of July 12, 2002

New President, David Brown, spent a few moments telling us about some of his plans for the club for this upcoming year. He began by introducing us to the Board of Directors. They are:
Herb Cole -- Vocational; Ren Partridge, Publicity and Membership; George Egan, Club Service; Dan Ercolini, Community Relations; Joni Hiramoto, International Relations; Bart Wallace, Programs. Joe Nusbaum is Secretary, Donna Bell is Treasurer and Stoney Stonework is Vice-President-President
Elect.

One project that David hopes to see realized in the next 12 months is a move to most communications in electronic format either through e-mails or website. Richmond Rotary has its own website, www.richmondcarotary.org  All club members should get in the habit of checking their e-mails and the website for information about the Club.

We should have a year full of valuable programs. Some upcoming events are: July 26th, California Highway Patrol Canine Corps; August 9, a veteran from the CIA will be on hand to give his perspective on Afghanistan; August 16th, Lisa McIntosh from East Bay MUD will give a state of the utility report; On August 23, we'll be hearing from District Governor Mark Von Hotzendorff and on August 30th, we'll mark a Polio Plus kickoff.

Dave looks forward to hearing from Richmmond Rotary members about ways to enhance projects such as Peres School sponsorship or the Christmas in April as well as the Club's donation process.

Happy $$$$$$

David Brown had a wonderful time in Europe. Unfortunately, the trip coincided with several things that went wrong on the homefront -- son's broken leg; broken sewer line at the house, etc. Welcome back David.Leslie Levy's son has left for an extended stay in Spain. He's working on his Spanish fluency.
Jan Brown was pleased to announce that her parents celebrated a 60th wedding anniversary by taking the family on a wonderful cruise. She's also happy because she celebrated her own wedding anniversary and birthday in this time period.
Michael Fenley was grateful that he was spared a polio shot prior to his trip to China. He thanks Rotary for its Polio Plus efforts around the globe.Gloria Johnston is celebrating the birth of her first grandson.Ken Leveridge completed his 50 mile for Muscular Dystrophy. He thanks all Rotarians who contributed to the cause.
Erle Brown is happy to be home after a great two week in the Azores.Tom Butt is pleased to announce the summer music series in Point Richmond.Ever modest Maarku Pelanne completed a trans-Atlantic flight using a single engine aircraft. Yes, he says, the plane started out with only one engine.
Although he cannot match some of the far-flung adventures of some Rotarians, Richard Alexander still had a wonderful 4 days at the happiest place on earth - Disneyland.
A very relaxed Richard Brandes asked us to guess why he was feeling happy.

Greetings Fellow Rotarians:

After all that talk at the last meeting about electronic transfers of
information, etc., my computer decided to get uppity. The fix is on now.Guess arguments can still be made about the value of "snail mail".

The next meeting of the Club will be held on Friday, July 19th at noon at the Mira Vista Country Club. Our guest speaker will be handwriting analyst Steve Kendell. No untoward readings will be made withoutpermission. Should be entertaining.

Last
Week:

President David Brown assumed his new office with his usual dash and good spirits. Richard Brandes, immediate Past President led us in the pledge. David's thought for the day was fitting, "Be careful what you wish for. You may get it."

Visiting Rotarians:

Guests: Pam Jones introduced her job shadow, Jennifer, who
will be learning the law under Pam's careful guidance. Richard Alexander re-introduced us to his daughter, Lauren. Charles Fender's guest, for the third time, was Jim Young. Jim looks like a solid prospect for Rotary membership. Jack Wilson was the guest of Charles Wong.

Announcements

Don Hardison was decked between decks on the Red Oak Victory Ship and ended up with a broken leg. Despite his fracture, Don was up  and about at the last Rotary meeting. Elof Granberg took a nasty spill and broke vertebra. He is home and on the mend. Best wishes for a speedy and easy recovery to both Don and Elof.

The next Richmond Rotary Board meeting will be held at noon at the Mira Vista Country Club on Thursday, July 18th. New members who have not attended a Board meeting should try to make this one. It would be a good way to kick off the new year.

Herb Cole reported on an upcoming Rotary trip to Ghana. The purpose of the trip is Rotary's Polio Plus initiative. This should be the last Rotary trip to Ghana to distribute innoculations because Polio has almost been eradicated in Ghana. The anticipated departure date is October 28th. For more information, call Herb Cole.

:Although there were no official recognitions at the July 12th meeting, Joanne Blum chipped in $43 as an annoucement of her latest wedding anniversary. Congrats to Joanne and her family.

Richmond Rotary Lotto

$580 was in the pot. Lauren Alexander picked a white ball. Dad gets a free lunch and better luck next time.

Respectfully submitted,
Giuseppe Verdi.
