Program of July 19, 2002

President DAVE introduced Steve Kendall, a realtor in his day job, who has considerable experience as a handwriting analyst, including using his talent in screening prospective job seekers.  According to him, handwriting can reveal if a person is suited for a particular career or occupation.

Using a handout, Steve demonstrated how individual personality traits are reflected in handwriting.  He illustrated how degrees of extroversion, organizational skill, and spontaneity manifest themselves in writing samples.  A scarier example was from a Manson gang member that included a tell-tale G and the maniacal D.

Spacing and size of writing can also be revealing, and a downward drift can indicate sadness or depression.  Writing closer to the left margin reveals a person who favors the past and the familiar.  One who writes closer to the right margin is more comfortable with the unknown and the future.

The intrepid BILL REID, who crowds the right margin, volunteered a writing sample.  It revealed him as organized and efficient (which we knew) and a potential architect (which we didn't).  Is there a career change in his future?

Despite evidence to the contrary, Steve claims to not be an expert in the field.  He said that agencies, such as the FBI, employ highly trained professionals whose skills are often used successfully in investigative work.

Recognitions
(with OSCAR LUGO presiding and JUDY KAFKA serving as Sergeant-at-Arms)
·JOSH GENSER and his wife observed a wedding anniversary and once again debated about getting a hot tub.  JOE KELMAN hinted, sotto voce and somewhat lasciviously, that this was a no brainer.
·WERNER SCHWARTZ and Leah celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss on a cruise.
·TED ABREU turned 67 the previous week and had a picture of his birthday cake to prove it.
·DICK KING celebrated a birthday.

Greetings Fellow Rotarians:

The next meeting of Richmond Rotary is set for Friday, July 26 at noon at the Mira Vista Country Club.

Last
Meeting:

President DAVID BROWN called the meeting to order.  Past President LESLIE LEVY led us in the pledge, and President DAVE followed with the thought for the day, a response from German actor, Fritz Kortner, to young people who told him he could not understand their problems: You were never as old as I am.  On the other hand, I was as young as you are now.  (A handy riposte for parents of teenagers.)

Visiting Rotarians:

Guests:  PDG WERNER SCHWARTZ' guest was Chuck Swenson of the Rotary Club of Ross Valley and JIM BATES had as his guest, Ted Pugh.

Announcements

·In the absence of Sunshine Chair DAVID K., President DAVE announced that WALTER WOLFFS, the Club member with the longest tenure (1936), has been under the weather.  A card was circulated to send to Walter.
·See GEORGE EGAN regarding the Bavarian Bash, District 5160's fundraiser.
·President DAVE reported that the Board of Directors, at their meeting the previous day, discussed the health screening project and clarified that it was for women as well as men.  He also said that they are seeking partners to participate in a Wheel Chair Foundation project to send a container of wheel chairs abroad.  Cost of such a container is $36,000.
·Later in the meeting, DICK KING announced that ArtTrain USA is coming to Richmond on September 7-8.  It will contain artworks from NASA and from the National Air and Space Museum collections.  Volunteers are needed to assist with this event which is free to the public.
·District 5160 Assistant Governor Barbara D'Anneo is looking for someone to host a Youth Exchange Student from Brazil in the coming year.
