Program for Friday June 14, 2002 Brian Pretti An economist and investment councilor with Mechanics Bank, will make his annual visit to Richmond Rotary. Brian will provide us his insights on the state of the economy; the stockmarket; and money in general. Brian is always informative and entertaining. If you pay close attention to Brian, you could actually make some money. Barry Gordon has the honors in introducing Brian. Let's have a big turnout for Brian ! Chairman of the Day: Door Duty: Dan Ercolini and Diana Becton-Smith * * * * * * * * * Program for Friday June 21, 2002 The program for June 21 also should be extremely worthwhile. We'll have a visit from
representatives of the new crime lab in Point Richmond. For anyone who enjoys
the t.v. show "CSI", this program will give us an opportunity to learn how forensic
science really works. Door Duty: Charlie Fender and Hans Shaper * * * * * * * * * Program of June 7, 2002 Because of a unforeseen scheduling conflict, Amanda Caldwell, Director of National Institute of Arts and Disabilities (NIAD), had to postpone her visit to the club. Richmond Rotarian, Joe Bagley, Board Member of NIAD, ably filled in for Amanda. Joe pointed out that NIAD was founded in 1984 by Psychologist Eli Katz and his wife, artist, Florence Katz. NIAD, located on 23rd St. very close to the intersection of Barrett, uses art, including pottery, ceramics, drawing, painting, computers, to give those with disabilities an opportunity to express themselves creatively. NIAD's gallery, led by Curator Rose Kelly, is open to the public and has wonderful pieces for sale. NIAD is a wonderful organization that provides a wonderful service right here in Richmond. Joe shared a recent episode of KRON's Doug McConnell's Bay Area Backroads. This particular taping was devoted entirely to Richmond with a signficant feature on NIAD. Thanks, Joe for a great last minute presentation ! Recognitions Happy birthday to Joe Nusbaum ! Happy 38th wedding anniversary to Herb Cole who paid a wonderful tribute to his wife, Norma. Happy $$$$$$ John Lawlis had happy dollars for a special Rotary pin that was sent his way. David Brown had a bittersweet donation made in memory of Don Mason. Leslie Levy was very pleased with the student interview program conducted at Richmond High School. Herb Cole had a "small world" story because he just learned that his wife and Dan Tanita's new bride were childhood neighbors in Texas. Rich Brandes is grateful to Past President Leslie Levy for conducting club meetings for the next few weeks. Dan Ercolini has a scary donation because his son just received a driver's license. Charles Fender just completed a 120 mile hike through the West Highlands in Scotland. Charlie, we're all glad you found your way back to Richmond ! . |
Greetings Fellow Rotarians: Through a series of unfortunate events, publication of this issue of the Flywheel has been postponed until today. Thanks for your patience. As usual the Club will meet at Noon at the Mira Vista Country Club, June 14th. LAST WEEK Rich Brandes, in "his last official duty as President", really gave the Rotary bell a good hit. It was truly rousing. Ken Leverick led us in the pledge. The thought for the day was channeled from George Bernard Shaw, " Take a deep breath; look around; be grateful for what you have." Visiting Rotarians: Welcome to David Kurland from Marin Sunrise. Guests: Greetings to Chris Alameda, Bud Martin's grandson and to Charlie Fender's guest, Jim Young of Comerica Bank. Announcements In memory of D-Day (June 6th) Elof Granberg asked that each of take a moment to remember all those who served on that fateful day. In memory of Dan Reedy, the Club received a wonderful donation from Daryl Davis, Past President, The Club's website is nearing completion. The website is part of the Club's goal of moving to paperless communication. We intend to conduct a survey shortly to ascertain whether we have reached a point in the club's history to rely on e-mail and a very short run of print version of the Flywheel. The Club's website address is www.richmondcarotary.org David Brown is forming a committee of Flywheel editors. This group will take turns producing the weekly record of our club's doin's. Jan Brown, Ken Leverich, Tom Schmidt and Joe Green are the early volunteers. (Editorial note: There is no better way to learn one's way around Richmond Rotary than to take a turn with the Flywheel. I have enjoyed this work and recommend it highly.) Veteran member "Who Am I" -- In an effort to bridge the generation gap, President Rich Brandes has called on long time Richmond Rotary members to share their personal backgrounds with the Club. Last week, a very modest Werner Schwarz stepped up to dais. Werner comes from a distant land in a far away galaxy with powers not common to most humans. Although, by his own admission, he is reluctant to show those powers. Werner never met a quip or a joke that he would not tell. Werner is now retired, but his professional career was almost always explosive from working in isotope research. Werner has been a member of Rotary since 1963. He was club President in 1980/1981 and District Governor in 1988/89. Werner has been responsible for several international initiatives from Richmond Rotary as well as the District. The organization has thrived because of his leadership. Charles Wong will get his chance at the June 14th meeting to win the big prize. Respectfully, Giuseppe (I am not a delinquent) Verdi "The only person who gets everything done by Friday is Robinson Crusoe." |
