RICHARD KWIETKAUSKI is a US Postal Inspector, serving the oldest law enforcement agency of the federal government. One of their biggest challenges of the new information era is identity theft  - a growing industry that takes advantage of ease of access to data. Identity theft victims suffer from being unaware of the theft until damage is done and then having no one supportive agency to assist. The Postal Inspection Service offers guidance on where to turn and how to prevent it. In a nutshell, shred all those stupid promotions and communications that give you unsolicited pre-approved credit or identify your birth date, driver's license or SSN (and write your congressperson to make them illegal). Thieves generally look for cluster mailboxes, or the red flag that indicates mail is going out. Empty your wallet and your life of unnecessary credit cards/accounts. Don't leave receipts behind. Be alert to anyone hovering around a mailbox. Check your credit report once a year. The list goes on. Thank you Richard for coming to Rotary and making us more aware of a growing problem.

Happy / Sad $$$$$$
CHERYL BLACK (Brown) gave up green for being with husband DAVID in Barcelona (on Rotary business). o Meanwhile, it's baseball and the A's that make JOE NUSBAUM smile these days o JUDY KAFKA is proud of her gracious Rotarian sponsor, DAVE CALFEE. o So is GEORGE EGAN. o OSCAR LUGO can't wait for next Friday's music fest in Point Richmond. o Proud grandfather HERB COLE (with stories to go with the title) announces that JUDY KAFKA and TED ABREU  will join him in Ghana as part of Polio Plus. What a wonderful mission. o DAN ERCOLINI is riding the tide with the A's, the Niners, and his own undefeated softball team. o GLORIA JOHNSTON has good news/bad news that affirms it's all good in time: the number of students attending our public schools reflects a welcomed but unexpected shift from the private sector …  and good teachers are in the wings to meet the challenge. o MICHAEL FINLEY traveled with family to Bejing, China, proudly cheering on his son who played in a youth baseball tournament there.

Truly sad news: DAN SANDERS reports the sudden and great loss of business associate, DAVID SUCHER of Orinda. Richmond Rotary extends its condolences to the family and friends of David at this difficult time.

Last
Meeting:
Prez DAVID called us all to order, RICHARD ALEXANDER led us in the pledge, and then we shared a moment of silence … (in the words of our poetic leader) "to reflect on the blessings of liberty which, we were reminded last September 11th, don't come without cost; to honor the memory of the victims of terrorism both at home and throughout the world; and of thankfulness to the men and women in uniform whose sacrifices are the guarantees of our own freedom."

Visiting Rotarians:
JOHN CLINTON was a visiting Rotarian; it was good to see RUSS SHULTZ back in town too.

Guests:
JUDY KAFKA's guests included husband VINCE and SALLY DEWITT (WERNER SCHWARZ's guest too). Prez DAVID was joined by wife, CHERYL.  GEORGE EGAN introduced RENEE HILL, Director of the Richmond Main Street Initiative.

Announcements

Contact HANK COVELL if you would like to attend the Masquers/Mac Benefit this coming Thursday, September 12 featuring a good mystery, The Inspector Calls. o The Bavarian Bash is October 5th in Dixon. o GSE applications are in the works (there's still time!). o The Artrain is in town. (JOE BAGLEY reports that it is an excellent "must see" with moon rocks and the works.) o JOE also reports a benefit for NIAD September 14 in Orinda. Moongate is $35 and benefits an organization that builds our community in many powerful ways. See Joe for tickets. o DAN ERCOLINI is still seeking operating systems for Windows machines for Peres students.

NEXT WEEK, SEPTEMBER 13, OUR MEETING IS AT LA STRADA IN SAN PABLO (Church Lane and San Pablo Ave.)! This will be our meeting place for Friday, October 4 as well, so mark those calendars

Recognitions
Richmond Rotary hopes DAVE CALFEE, our man in the mountains, lives to be 1000! Thank you Dave for your birthday and anniversary honorariums o ERLE and PHYLLIS BROWN celebrated a special anniversary thanks to a Cal Bear (finally!) victory o JOANNE BLUM celebrates a birthday too. Congratulations and thank you to these generous Rotarians!

JOE BAGLEY recognized himself! He and RITA remain committed to walking 60 miles for breast cancer research in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk.

Richmond Rotary Lotto
CHERYL BLACK (Brown) tried to make green from orange but went white. So at over $1200 you or your guest has an increasingly excellent chance to make Richmond Rotary's community coffers at least $600 richer

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 sharp.

Respectfully submitted,

Jan B. Nimble
