(MIG) was introduced by Bart Wallace. Mr. Ney treated us to a planner's overview of bridge building and what to expect as the new Carquinez Bridge unfolds. Originally built in 1927 with a second bridge added in 1958, construction of a new bridge was deemed necessary when retrofitting the original 1927 bridge proved to be prohibitive in cost and inadequate for current use. Preservation and documentation of the early bridges' history has been carefully planned (you'll eventually see evidence of it at the Vista Point overlooking the strait). With the enthusiasm of a visionary, Bart brought sketches, a length of cable, descriptions of problems encountered and solved (underwater for the most part) and even a short course in cable spinning. The backdrop to his presentation was one of the best views of the Bay Area with all its bridges (courtesy of Richmond Rotary's meeting place). Pretty impressive. Richmond Rotary is grateful to Bart Ney for his informative talk. And thank you Bart Wallace for bringing Bart Ney to our club. |
